I think it fundamentally sends a message that America is a balanced country, or a country that strives to achieve balance. It states that, yes we will accept those who want to come to this country, but it is incumbent of them to also abide by our laws. Freedom in America is not the allowance to do as one WANTS to do, but the power to do what one OUGHT to do. Freedom that is not guided by some restriction is a pathway to misery and tyranny.

As usual not a good message. The United States has always depended on some of its economic success to suffice for the goodness of its citizens; however, that has undermined the true values of the American people. Currently, under the Bush Regime, we as American citizens are being represented as the Bullies that everyone else in the world thinks that we are. Though we have been attacked by some radical Muslims, we seem to have adopted this policy that ALL Muslims are criminal. We are seen as retaliatory and everyone in the world knows that the only reason the US is in the Middle East is to protect the oil that we have become so dependent on over the years. As far as the National Guard patroling the southwest border of the US, we have to maintain the US as the US. The US permits certain freedoms to those that are natives or naturalized citizens. When it comes to the illegal alien, that is where the line has to be drawn. If these folks would stay in their home country and insist on a better life then they will eventually have it. It is not the United States responsibility to nurse maid every illegal person who feels that they should have dibs on the US economy and lifestyle. If these Mexicans really wanted a richer life in their home country, they would stay there and fight for it. That is simply the way that it is.

From what I get from the people I regularly chat with from Asia, the Middle East and Russia. the face Uncle Sam has is one of a two-faced arrogant egotistical bully. One that tries to tell every one to do this or that, but is not willing to follow the same set of rules he tries to dole out to others. And only support the world view on things when it suits the bottom line goal of Washington. I asked my Russian friend why the Russians are not part of the Iraq peace keeping force. She said no Russian wants to be involved because the majority of Russian see it as a Bush oil grab. The reasons that Saddam was sitting on bio-weapons etc, and was poised to use them at any moment never rang true to them. So why were so many Americans duped? Those in Asia I have spoke with can not phantom why it was so important to go into Iraq when N. Korea has the nukes. So what the US appears like is some thug pouncing on a weaker nation for their oil because they had the might to do so.

Ho ho ho....I am an American living in China...and no one seems to know what to think about the US. Chinese wonder why...or how the US will respond to Cuba, TaiWan, Japan and North Korea for starters...and about 190 other countries and issues. Here we see mixed, confusing and frustrating issues arise only to be met with mixed, confusing and frustrating responses. President Hu JinTao has tried to work with Bush but was sort of pushed aside (But thank heaven for Bill Gates). Chinese don't expect the US to kowtow to China, but would like a good working relationship.

That we allow people in, only those that we want in. That is a far cry from the meaning of the statue. I believe that we need to be somewhere in between accepting everyone to where we seem to be going now under Bush and the Neo-Cons.

Exactly the right message. That we're a free country that respects the rule of law and by doing so we will remain free.

That this is a country that will not let just any ol' riff raff into it. That we have rules just like any other country, and that they can feel safe because we are trying not to become a country full of criminals from other countries trying to hide from prosecution.

we appear to be giving them the finger. we look deeply conflicted with all this talk of freedom wrapped up in a police state.
