Is it the lighting? Lack of lighting? There always seems to be an industrial fan blowing on everyone, too.

Unlike most scripted/dramatic television, soap operas are shot on video, which for a multitude of reasons (frame rate, range of sensitivity to color, range of sensitivity to light) just doesn't look like film (which is what primetime dramas and comedies are shot with, now). Video also calls for a bit more lighting than film does.

Moreover, because of the production schedule (consider that they have to output five new hours' worth of footage every week), the director doesn't have the luxury of lighting each shot as perfectly as they could if they were working on TV, which itself has less of that luxury than feature films. So the sets are often lit in a pre-set, more or less permanent "one-setup-fits-all" manner, which for some shots in a scene might be less ideal than for other shots.
