Some boxes are round, some pizzas are square. Domino's actually designed a box that keeps your pizza warm longer. Original Italian pizza was eaten by peasants and did not use tomatoes. Deep dish pizza was actually dreamed up by a Texan business man who wanted "more to bite into" than the thin crust Italian style provided. Pizza Hut got it's name because there was only room for 3 letters on the sign after "Pizza".

when pizza boxes were invented- all boxes were pretty much square (hence the name "box")- they were much easier to manufacture and put together, and for something that is a low-cost item it has served its purpose in its current shape. We throw away the boxes anyways, so I dont think anyone really sees any need or benefit to changing the shape of the box.

When I was a kid we used to have a pizza place called "pizza bucket" or something like that and they used to deliver pizza in a KFC type of bucket. They had a bunch of Gremlins (AMC) that they used for delivery vehicles too.

try folding a few hundred round boxes on a friday night.

Also, the square box makes it much easier to actually grab the pizza.
