David Copperfield concerns the rise to political prominence of a young one-legged Inuit in London in the 1830's. The main character after David, Aloisous MacDonnegal, is a portly chap with a penchant for fine silk and ladies unmentionables who scampers about lowering the tablecloths to protect Victorian men from being aroused by a shapely table leg. Early in the story, young David meets McGrudenberry, a sinister type, who sells him into white slavery in Cornwall. After escaping, with the help of a mirror, three pieces of thread, and an amusing shaving mug in the shape of a phallus, David journeys with Aloisous to Cumbria where he explores Arthurian legend over kippers and licorice with Sarah, his one true love. She, of course, loves Aloisous, and David travels to Portsmouth to try to forget her charms. It doesn't work, and so he moves to London, where he becomes employed as a chimneysweep with Roscoe Ledbetter, a third cousin, twice removed, of Aloisous. Roscoe informs David that Aloisous and Sarah are really brother and sister (separated at birth in Dickens seminal work: Wunderkids), so David returns to Sarah's house to reclaim his love. Sarah, however, has become a Tory and, as David is distinctly Labor oriented, David once again journeys to London where he discovers his true father in the person of the Lord Mayor, who forces him at knifepoint to stand for Parliament. Due to a series of interesting deaths, David ultimately finds himself Prime Minister, in which role he secretly rogers Queen Victoria roughly from behind. She insists she is not amused and goes to the press, but the nation stands behind the galvanizing figure of David, and the novel ends with a triumphant parade round about Nelson’s Column (yet another phallic symbol).
