I copied some stuff from a web site and pasted into word. How do I get rid of the boxes or lines around some of it? Borders/ format didn't work.

go to view and click on "web layout"

Well, try selecting the text and unclicking the "underline" button. Or, if you get too frustrated you can select the text a little at a time and copy it into a new document. Just select the text and try to avoid the junk around it. Do one line at a time.

select the text and then click on table on the top menu, click on remove borders. can't remember all the steps right now

If you take material from any source on any topic without giving credit to the author you are committing plagiarism, which if a form of theft.
