Thanks for being concerned for your neighbor's well being. S/he is lucky to have you there. As a good neighbor, you know what to do, and just treating her as you would any other neighbor is cool.

With respect and love. It's a traumatic thing she's doing, and chances are she doesn't really have anyone to support her emotionally. You'd make her day if you just treated her like a regular woman, relate to her like you would anyone else. She'd probably appreciate knowing there's someone she doesn't have to be afraid of close by.

If they're being pretty open, they'll probably be pretty open to (respectful) questions. Like...you might ask which pronouns they prefer so you don't have to write out "he / she" when you ask questions here. :P Aside from that, the fact that you're asking shows you're at least trying to be supportive: for many people that's kind of enough and they'll tell you where to go from there.

First, stop saying he/she. She is a she. treat her like you would any other woman. If the occasion arises for you to say "ma'am" do so (but don't go out of your way and make it obvious). Forget that she may not look like a model woman - few women do. Also try to avoid gossiping and try to use "she" and "her" whenever you might have to refer to her in the third person. Thanks for caring.

Just be yourself. The more natural you are the more comfortable they'll be.
