The West entrance to Yellowstone has lot of campsites. If I were you, I would go to Barnes and Nobel (etc.) and pick up a book called the Montana Atlas and Gazetteer. It will be a good resource for you. Also, if you go near Mammoth Hot Springs, near Gardener bring your swim trunks, and look for signs for the boiling river (if you hit Mammoth Hot Springs you have gone too far) The hot springs flow into the Gardener River, and people walk there for a soak. Have fun!

I don't know about camping - there seem to be a lot of places to choose from.

Lodging, however, does not get any better than the El Tovar. My wife and I make an annual trip suring the winter just to stay there. Food, service and the view are superb.
