There has never been and never will be a "free nation" for as the term implies im a free nation nothing you could do would be illegal as you would be free to do it.
I'm sure I wouldn't want to live in a completely free nation but then some of the laws (rules) we have to live by are stupid and archaic.
Also politicians always lie about things so whatever they say is always different from what you get.

it is a lie, it is supposed to mean that you can choose your leaders. In reality you get a slight chance of picking one of two pre-selected people and parties that have the same aims and goals. out of these two, the electoral system is weighted to almost guarentee a particular winner.
The Powers That Be always win.
We don't even have freedom of thought or freedom of speech anymore in the UK. If I was to claim that Guy Fawkes had the right idea, and mean it, I could be arrested for supporting terrorism. If I were to read out a list of the names of soldiers killed in the war on terrorism at the cenataph in London, I would get a criminal record. A man was arrested and detained under terrorism laws for having the gall to say that our home secretary was speaking nonesense.
So the free in free nation means they are free to screw you over and you are free to do as they tell you.

Meaning that you can elect those people to say that we are a free nation. Basically, read the Bill of Rights. Most countries can't speak against their leaders, read the Bible, or even vote! You have restrictions obviousy, but you also have more freedoms than anyone else in the world!

free to be ripped off by the corporations, free to not imprison the politicians who make a fortune out of it. free to pay more taxes, etc
remember, your idea of 'free' is not the same as that described by politicians (providing you can get a straight answer)

Politicians mean they can control your money, your taxes, your charity, the rules, the law enforcement, curfew, schools, welfare, restrictions, environmental issues, shut down corporations, etc, etc.
But hey, you can PICK what job you do so that the government can take almost half of the money you earn and give to joe blow at the corner who lives off welfare because he refuses to get a job.
Politicians are full of crap.

The opposite of a dictatorship or other dominating central government. It means the people are free to vote and free to choose their representatives and form of government.
