What species of hermit crab do you have? I will assume it is one of the terrestrial species. The best crabitat for your hermit crab should hold in the humidity but let in fresh air. A glass aquarium works well. You will need a sliding cover for it. This is to both keep the humidity and the crab inside. Moisture is important for the survival of hermit crabs. They breathe with modified gills which require moisture and humidity. In a dry environment, the crabs may die from suffocation. You will need substrate - sand. Never use gravel or wood chips. The sand should be deep enough to cover your crab by an inch. This should be changed at least once a month and kept clean. Hermit crabs dig in and hide when they are molting. You should keep a variety of empty shells in the crabitat for when the crab molts. Do not paint the shells, it can be toxic to your pet. Do not use soap to clean the crabitat , use vinegar and rinse thoroughly. And have a few things like coral for the crabs to climb on.

You should mist your hermit crab with water from a spray bottle every day to help keep it from drying out or put a moistened natural sponge in the cage.
