Usually it is a year -- but I'll tell you, my son has a Dell desktop and we have NOT been happy AT ALL with their tech support. They outsource their phone banks to people overseas who don't speak or understand English well and know even less about computers. Also, we ended up being billed for the entire cost of a printer even though their rep said on the phone that they were going to apply a rebate toward it -- and because they demanded my 42-year-old son give them his parents address and phone #, we kept getting collection calls over and over about this (he refused to pay the extra amount that should have been covered by the rebate) even though he did not live here and we told them that umpteen times. This was finally settled but not without a huge hassle. I would not buy a Dell if it were the last computer on earth.

I used to work, as a computer technician, for a company that dealt only with Dell Laptops. If you're getting one, I recommend the best, most expensive warranty they'll sell you. Many of the laptops I've fixed had $100-$600 worth of hardware repairs each time. Some of the users returned to us once or more a month a month with a new problem because their laptop was a lemon, others never even met us because their laptop was great.
I've spoken with quite a few Dell representatives, and though you occasionally get lucky with just a southern accent, you often wind up talking to Joe Middeeast. Sometimes they're great and fast, other times they are jerks or idiots. Just call back and try to talk to someone else. I once was on the phone with Dell for about an hour and a half to order $4 worth of case screws that fell out of a laptop.
They're replace just about anything on a laptop for almost any reason with their good warranty. "Water Damage", "Hard drive failure", "RAM failure", "motherboard failure", and even "Act of God" (yes, it's true).
You call, they either send you a technician or a box to send the laptop in to the nearest repair center (sweet deal).
If you're buying a desktop, I hardly find the big warranty necessary, though you must make sure you don't suspect anything wrong with the computer before their 90-day warranty dies... or any warranty for that matter.

They offer 90 days to 4 yr warrenty. But the problem I find most people facing is they have to trouble shoot with someone in another country. Then, Dell, hires independent contractors to repair the machine. That is why I recomend a local dealer that you can trouble shoot with and can repair your system. Their computers prices may be $100 or $200 higher, but well worth it in the long run. And as cheap as Dell systems are made, using one fan for the processor and exsaust fan, you will be needing a technician for one.

What KIND of warranty,
I'd dare to say that replacing a part if its damaged, from what I've heard they might send a techie to check on your computer if they think its meritory, though the best way to find out is actually contacting Dell this is some of the sort you should be expecting.
