I'm still researching hemp, trying to get a license to grow a crop in Canada. Does anyone know about growing it in the north, and how you eventually make it into rope and clothes?

You'd have to contact the gov't for the license and whatnot, but here's some trivia for you:

The hemp fiber is the longest in the plant world.
Canvas gets it's name from cannabis.
When steam is applied to hemp fibers they split - making a thread as soft as silk.

Most people think cannabis was banned because of the THC effects, but in fact it was an excuse to ban hemp. Up until right before hemp was banned it was a labour heavy task to process the fibers. Then someone found a much faster way.

Why was it banned? Because Dupont was developing products from crude oil byproducts - nylon.

Then the cotton industry was threatened - hemp is stronger and much, much easier to grow than cotton.

Despite common sense, cannabis and hemp are still prohibited in the US... because the cotton and chemical industries would take a severe loss if it became mainstream.

Why? Not only can the fibres be used for clothes, but they can be used in construction for fibre boards. The seeds are incredibly good for you and contain omega 3, 6 and 9... amongst other awesome stuff.

Only the leaves and flowers have the drug THC. Not the seeds, not the roots, not the stalks.

Hemp also makes incredibly strong and long lasting paper.

Shall I go on?
