Thanks both for the information. I turn my AC on and the outside uit doesn't work. I checked the fuses outside the house and they were both gone. I replaced new fuses and they both burned immediately again. I think that somewhere the wire is shorted to ground and I am afraid that the compressor is shot.

I checked the compressor terminal and it shows continuity. I was told the cost will be $1800 for replacement and $2300 for a new outside unit. Is the price reasonable? I think that I have 4-ton unit. Thanks

If you still have continuity on the compressor and you are blowing fuses immediately, if there is no shorted wires, it is probably shorted to ground and burned out. Make sure you remove wires from compressor before checking continuity.
Also check continuity to ground-you shouldn't have any on a standard multimeter set on a low range (as opposed to a megohm meter)
Take the cap off of the access fitting and smell the refrigerant-if it smells pungent and burns your nose, it is roasted. Replace both indoor coil or air handler and outdoor unit if it is older than 5 years old, not just the compressor.
A new compressor will have only a 1 year warranty and system will need cleaned up within refrigerant circuit. A burnout or short will sometimes affect other components. Most new systems have 10 year compressor warranties. You will be better off. You will pay over twice as much as just the compressor but you should be set for quite sometime.

I have a flash for you. When the compressor is shot the whole thing is shot. You need a new unit. call a professional.
