Macs are good & great for multimedia & artistic types...no viruses to speak of...but backwards & a PIA if you learned PC.
Compaq is good because you can put other upgrades in them without interface problems.
Dell & the one with the cow print logo make sure you can ONLY use *their* parts in their machines. So, a friend gave my boyfriend a HUGE drive, & because his computer is dell, he can't use it. All I need to use it in my Compaq presario is a cable I can get at any electronics store. It's MINE now!

You wanna know which would provide the most value for money and then you say money isn't important? Odd. Building your own computer is always best because you can tailor it to completely suit your needs. Branded computers are usually built with an imbalance. People rightly or wrongly assume that the CPU is the most important component of a computer and they are partly right but there are other parts which are extremely important as well. So to take advantage of that, branded computers usually have awesome CPU's and crappy video cards because video cards require a bit more advanced knowledge to know if they're any good or not. Building your own will give better value for money because branded computers are usually built from poor quality parts, especially the PSU. That doesn't have to be the case when you build your own.

Home built. Pick your own components. Send me a message and I will send you a link to one I build.
A word on DELL. They are not good bangs for your buck. Loaded with advertisement software and Registry trigger keys. You can build the same thing cheaper yourself AND choose your case style. Sometimes they dont HAVE the GFX card that you want. Sometimes they dont have the Motherboard that you want.
A good Dell example is that they should be the first to be offering Conroe or Woodcrest systems but theyre NOT!
Dont get me wrong, they engineer their cases and airflow EXCELLENTLY. But they just dont have the greatest parts to choose from..
Compaq is the worst.
Notebooks? Dell takes the cake.
PCs? Homebuilt takes the cake.
Why? Because you control (in a small way) the quality and brands of the components used to build it. You also get to build it for EXACTLY what you need it for and can choose to select upgradeable parts or not. Its also cheaper...
Id say most importantly, you dont have to rely on a company "Recovery Disc" which just reloads everything back on the PC and sometimes overwrites things.
By building your own PC you control what is installed on it initially. The less you install, the longer your PC will last.
I build PCs for my company. Several people have built their first computers. Most of them from reading a PC magazine and making a shopping list. It's also good to know about your PCs innards. =)

By far, Apple Macintosh....... less viruses and spyware that affect them, far superior performance and reliability, and far easier to use and learn. Also, although it is true that Windows PCs have more software available, everything you REALLY need is available for the Mac. Macs also make it much easier to do didgital media stuff like digital movies and pictures, and I can upload my photos from iPhoto to my .mac website in literally a minute or two. iPhoto is only available on the Mac and is far superior than the photo collection programs for Windows. Apple's .mac ("dot mac") is a great little package of online services including email, homepage and Virex with unlimited virus definition updates. iChat is a great AIM-compatible IM program - far better than the real AIM - and only on the Mac. Please, at least go to the Apple store and try a Mac out before you buy a PC.....The best value with overall package and included features is the iMac....... I'll never go to a PC and I know people who used to insult my Macs and now have switched to Mac and will never go back.....

Apple, every part about them is built within apple, except for the intel chip, so if one part doesn't work with another, they have to resolve it. With pc's, when windows sends out an update, it is a generall update for all pc's and not made for the specific company windows os, so its too general to fix problems on all of the windows os.

Dell's got the best prices, you can't pay as you go, and they fix any problems with the computer, then you can always upgrade with them trading in your old one.

White box. You can build it the way you want without a lot of extra crap you don't need, and it'll run better. Mine's going on 8 years.
