The fact that the earth revolves round the sun and not the other way round was, in fact and contrary to popular belief, first demonstrated by the Persian astronomer/mathematician/poet, Omar Khayyam in the 11th century, a few hundred years before Copernicus or Galileo.
excerpt from Wikipedia : "Omar Khayyam also estimated and proved to an audience included the-then prestigious and most respected scholar Imam Ghazali, that the universe is not moving around earth as was believed by all at that time. By constructing a revolving platform and simple arrangement of the star charts lit by candles around the circular walls of the room, he demonstrated that earth revolves on its axis, bringing into view different constellations throughout the night and day(completing a one-day cycle). He also elaborated that stars are stationary objects in space which if moving around earth would have been burnt to cinders due to their large mass. All these theories were centuries later adopted by Christian astronomers to their credit, as we know them now."

What? Uh, the Earth DOES revolve around the sun... Do you mean to ask, "When did humans first believe the sun revolved around the Earth"?

If so, the answer is "the first time one of them looked up during the daytime."

(Actually, technically, the Earth and Sun revolve around a point somewhere between the two, which is their mutual center of gravity.)

Copernicus... or was it Kepler? They noticed the eccentric patterns that Mars, Jupiter and Venus took as it crossed the sky. MArs would appear to move foward, then back and higher, then descend to make a full loop and then continue foward again. Kepler make a mechanical model to prove it was so and was harrased by the church for heresay.

As was Galileo 100 years later.
