An Oliphaunt or mûmak (plural mûmakil) is a large pachyderm of the southern land of Harad, similar to but much larger than today's elephant, and said to be its ancestor. It was employed as a weapon of war and a beast of burden by the natives of Harad, the Haradrim, during the wars of the Third Age. It became extinct by the end of the Fourth Age.
The Haradrim, also known as Southrons are a tribal group of humans from the southern region of Middle Earth. Yeah, they are humans that are allies to the evil Sauron. Go figure. They are jerks just like Saruman.

The Haradrim or Southrons...
One of these peoples ride the great mûmakil in battle, which Tolkien describes as a larger ancestor of the modern elephant. At the Battle of the Pelennor Fields the Haradrim cavalry are led by a chieftain bearing the standard of a black serpent on a red field.

The Haradrim. The swarthy men from Harad south of Mordor.
They were also called Southrons by some because they come from the south.
