Well, if you lose your mucous plug you are dialating for sure. But, primarily, a doctor or nurse can say for certain after checking you.

Knowing dilation really won't tell you anything.

You could be closed up tight as a drum when you're checked and have a baby a few hours later.

You could walk around for weeks dilated to 3 cm.

Many midwives never even check dilation.....even in labor. They have learned to watch the mother and know by how she is acting and trust her body instead.

If you *REALLY* want to know, ask your caregiver to check you next time...but like I said it won't tell you much.

AND you CAN check yourself. I found it easiest if I did it while either sitting on the toilet or standing with one leg propped up on the side of the tub. Wash your hands and have well-trimmed fingernails. DO NOT do this if you think your water has broken already!

RO....It's not "inches" it's "centimeters!"

Unless it is accompanied by contractions you really can't. Sometimes even contractions don't tell the story... they can be unproductive.
