well if it is a prallel printer you can get a A B switch box that has a little knob that you turn to select the computer. if it is a USB printer there are several USB switched that will enable multiple computers to share a single USB device.

However the most cost effective way is to network the 2 computers, eable file and print sharing, and share out the printer that way. You will be able to transfer files between the 2 computers, share a common internet connection and the printer

The only limitations on any of the 3 meathods I mentioned above are cost, ease of use, and distance.

The first one would be easiest however it is using slightly obsolete hardware and with that time consuming and expensive. (try finding a 25 pin printer cable that is straight through now adays. )

The USB switch is easy also however I dont know anyone that has actually done it that way.

Networking can be cheap with 2 $15 network cards ( that your machine may already have) and a $20 crossover cable (unless you already have DSL/Cable with a router)

what kind of printer do you have, some printers have a local port lpt 1 and other have a usb port, if both of these had in your printer just connect each type to different computer and set is a default for computer no# 1 set is as lpt1 port , for the no#2 set it in usb port that will do and no extra cost for you.

You could either go wireless and get a router and print from anywhere in the house.

If your printer is a parrallel port, then you can get a splitter.
If your printer is usb, you can get a mutiple use USB adapter.
