I am almost 38 weeks pregnant and the doctor checked me today and said that my cervix is starting to thin out and all the other doctors said they might not even see back in for my next doctors appt. Does this mean the baby is coming soon? Help!!! I'm scared first baby.

I just had my fourth baby on July 10th. So congratulation!! I know the feelings that you are going through.

It looks like you are on your way to having a baby. However, when your cervix starts to thin it means that you could be having a baby tomorrow or in 2 weeks. It's all about how dilated you are.

Just remember that if it happens soon, yes, there are some scary parts about labor. But when they lay that little one on your chest - it's all worth it!! Good Luck!!

Well, since your 38 weeks then obviously the baby will be coming soon. But to answer your question the cervix thinning is the last step before dialation. So your could be looking at a couple days to a week or so.

Don't be scared, women have been do this since the beginning of time. Good luck to you.

If it's just starting to thin, but you aren't dilated yet, I am going to bet you'll probably make it to your appt. next week. You can be completely thinned out and even dilated a couple of centimeters, and still not go in to labor. Nevertheless, you are 38 weeks, so the baby is going to come soon anyway, as 40 weeks is full term. Don't be scared, it's an awesome experience! I wish you all the luck in the world.

You are close to the end. Before the cervix dilates to let the baby pass it must first thin and eface. You are in the early parts of beginning to go into labor , however, you could still go 2 or 3 weeks.

Don't be scared;) it's perfectly normal for the cervix to thin out as you get closer to delivery. Next time a doctor tells you something and you're not sure what s/he's talking about, ask them. Sometimes docs forget that not all patients understand medical jargon. Congratulations!

I have 2 children. My first one was due on December 18th, 2001. I went in for a "check-up" the beginning of November, and the Dr. told me that my cervix was thinned out and I was dilated to 1, and they were going to make me another appointment but they doubted I would last that long.... the following week, I was dilated to two, blah blah blah.... a week later.... dilated to 4, another appointment, doubted I would last that long, blah blah blah... We scheduled an appointment to induce my labor for January 3rd. I delivered naturally on January 2nd. I'm not saying that this will happen in your particular case, but don't let them get your hopes up. You'll know when you're going into labor, either when your water breaks or you start bleeding. (Which is what happened to me. My bag of water had to be manually erupted on both of my pregnancies.)

The latent phase - generally, this stage is the longest and the least painful part of labour. The cervix can thin out over weeks, days or hours and be accompanied by mild contractions. The contractions may be regularly or irregularly spaced, or else you might not even notice them at all.

Well, at 38 weeks you're almost done. And the fact that your cervix is thinning (effacing) is evidence that your body's getting ready to deliver. Uh, first pregnancy or not, you DID know this would happen sooner or later, right?!?

Don't be scared! I'm 38 weeks, too. I saw my doc yesterday, and I'm 50-60% effaced and 1 1/2 centimeters dilated. My doc said it could be any day, or it could be another two weeks.
Effacement and dilation can be slow or fast, no one knows.
You'll be fine either way!
