So you can get the proper overall tone.
Is there some kind of test? I've seen this question four times already.

Well most pieces are written with diferent vocals for diferent kinds of voices.
The main vocal classifications are Bass, Tennor, Alto, and Soprano
You cant have a man singing Soprano if he can't hit the notes or a Woman singing Bass if her voice wont reach that low.
Granted there are Counter Tennore which can sing soprano but it must be decided if the voice is able to go that high.
There are sub divisions also if the piece calls for it.
such as Mezzo Soprano
Soprano 1
Soprano 2
Alto 1
Alto 2
Tennor 1
Tennor 2
Bass 1
Bass 2
If you do not know the voices which can correctly project the written part then you can't make it sound good. Also someone who is put in a part which their voice is not meant to go into they can rip their vocal cord and injure their voice perminantly
Thats the most basic I can write it with out getting into all the logistics

Have you ever heard someone singing a high note when the person should be singing a much lower note? Some times people need to be told they can't sing in a particular way. That's why the classification is there; to assess a person's singing capacity.

Each of the voices has a particular range, and sound best when singing within that range.
It makes the overall sound of the chorus more harmonious and sonorous.
When composers write songs, they are aware of what each vocal range sounds like, and composes each part to reflect that. Ex., altos tend to have a richer, darker sound than sopranos.

Because you don't want a 2nd Alto trying to hit a 1st Soprano's notes. That could hurt their vocal cords.

If you are interested in the finished product, you need to know if you will be heavy in one area or the other, too many sopranos can kill you, but then we are talking about music.

If you don't know whether someone is a soprano, alto, tenor or bass, how do you allocate which parts of the music they have to sing?
