Why do people in Pittsburgh drive SO SLOW through the tunnels? I've never seen this phenomenon in any other city.

I've lived in the Pittsburgh area my whole life, and generally, I drive through the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, usually not at rush hour. My question is just about why people sllow down inside or right before the tunnel and then the traffic thins out immedieatly after the tunnel.

I've lived in Pittsburgh my whole life too. I always figured that they tunnel phenomenon was caused by non-pittsburghers. I don't think anyone that lives in the city is timid of the tunnels, however even people visiting from other areas of PA are less familiar with tunnels and slow down as a precaution.

Hun, every city has a different style of driving.
When I was in Florida, nobody used their blinker.
Here in Missouri, everyone slows down for no reason when they see a cop car pulling someone over or when there is a car accident.
People in New York are constantly honking their horns.
There are simply things everywhere that you may notice. Also, though, many people may drive slowly through the tunnels for safety reasons. It's darker there, and accidents are more dangerous. Try not to judge, but you'll notice things like that.

Lemme tell you... I hate going through the Pitt Fort Tunnel inbound during rush hour.
It's really one of the mysteries of life... I don't think there is an answer that anyone could give. It really drives me crazy as well though.

I HAVE LIVED IN PITT MY HOLE LIFE AND I DONT THINK PEOPLE DRIVE SLOW THEY ARE JUST VERY CONJESTED
