Everything on TV, shows violence, bad language, sexual content and applied sex acts/ violence etc. Cartoons are just as bad as actual TV shows, they both share the same adult humor. It's just a point of monitoring what your child watches if you don't want them to see any bad things. The bad things are everywhere on TV so you should just explain to your child the rights and wrongs of TV programs.
To really answer the question. I along with my 14 year old brother, enjoy watching animal planet (TV network) (mercat manor, dog whisper) history channel and TLC. MTV's Made program is also a good show. Lets your child see people just like he or she trying to obtain a goal of theirs but just a little help and dedication. They are mainly all learning channels, but they are fun and interesting to watch. I'm sure your 13 year old would enjoy it too if you sit and watch with them and talk about whats going on.

any show on nick or disney, if you like those preteen type of shows. If not try the wb(going to be cw) for some teen shows. Smallville and supernatural if you like action. Gilmore girls if you like two girls talking really fast in incomplete thoughts. There's always 7th heaven if you like that sort of thing.

There are some good sitcoms. If he/she enjoys sports, that's another alternative. Also, the History Channel and PBS programs are excellent.

there are no good shows for anyone.
Except the news.
As an alternative,
take them outside.
teach them.
show them the world.
let them learn.
