Ask him what future he has to look forward to? Varitek is out 4-6 weeks. Nixon's out. Beckett gives up too many homeruns. Shilling can't carry the team all by himself and even he's vulnerable. The Yankees lineup is just as potent as the Red Sox and the Yankees have been without Sheffield and Matsui for most of the season.
Yankees have two 13 game winners and an 11 game winner. They're in first place in the division. Just about every starter on the Yankees has been injured and missed some playing time. The bench players have done a tremendous job. The Yankees made a couple big moves before the trade deadline getting Abreu, Lidle, Fasano, Wilson, and trading away Chacon. Red Sox made absolutely no moves before the trade deadline. Yanks are going to win the Division this year and White Sox will take the Wild Card leaving the Red Sox on the outside looking in.
Ask him if the reason he wants to get out from the past is because the Red Sox like to finish runner up to the Yankees all the time.

It's 26-6 in favor of the Yankees on WS victories. To be honest (I'm a red sox fan) over the past 5 years or so, the 2 teams have been almost even...
In other words, just watch the games, do your trash talking, and let the season play out as it should.

You can't argue with a Red Sox fan...they will NEVER admit the Yankees are the better organization, no matter how many titles the Yankees win.
It's been that way through history...and it was cemented when Bucky "F"in Dent went deep.
Red Sox fans are passionate fans, but they will never admit the Yankees are anything but Evil!

To be honest, all the Yankee fans I know are living in the past because you got use to winning in the 90's. Now that you can't get one, all you can say is that the Yankees have won more in the past than any other organization.

Tell your friend that you play to win, and that you play to win the World Series. The Yankees win, and if in the next ten years the Sox win ten times, you know he will be saying the same thing to you.

please...bosox fans get all geeked and say that the teams are basically even...full of crap...I know I haven't seen the red sox in the WS as often as I have seen New York...regardless of whether Boston won in 2004 or not...they're nowhere near equal...you HAVE to count the history of a team when it CONTINUES to win....you know which titles you have to ignore???
how about the fact that Yale and Princeton have over 20 National College Football Titles..but neither have won in DECADES...
the same does not hold true for the Yankees...so the past STANDS...

Yankees have won more titles than any other team in sports. That is what you can tell your friend. Yankees have won 26 World Series I think. Boston has only won 2.
