It's THICK and often tinged with a little brown blood.
However, it doesn't really matter if you realize you passed it or not. It doesn't signal the beginning of labor (it could still be weeks), and some people don't lose it until active labor.

You can be real bloody. I passed a clot and my undies were soaked in blood and when I call the doc, he said that I probably lost my mucus plug and that I should go to the hospital.

That is normal its called luekhorria, I had it throughout my pregnancy as well. The plug will be thick and gelatinous and may or may not have blood. Trust me you will know the difference. The same way you will definitely know when your water breaks!!!
Good Luck :-)

Usually when you lose the mucus plug is when your water breaks. Ergo, when it feels like you just wet yourself but your bladder isn't full, chances are that's what happened, and it's time to go to the hospital.

You'll know...it's unmistakeable. It could all fall out at once, or it could come out in pieces. It's incredibly thick, very, very sticky, and could be tinged with blood (but it doesn't have to be). It's very "flubbery" and "blobby", for lack of better words.

Okay, totally gross....but YOU WILL KNOW. It's as gross as the name implies, it's a slimy, browinish slimey ball of mucus! Ewww, it was way gross. I didn't pass it with my first child. With the second...I had my membranes scraped and later that night...lost this ball of nasty-ness.

When you break water, that's when you lose your mucus plug.
