It is because he was not born yet and it is possible in theory to go back in time and die.

There are many theories regarding time travel in science.
Think of one theory like a CD-R disc vs another theory like a CD-RW disc.
In the first theory, a visitor from the future can interact and change the past.
In the second theory, a future visitor could only observe, and not interact. CLearly, Terminator is applying the first theory. What is left unresolved is how he could emerge from the future after having already caused his own death. It would seem logically impossible.
There is a web site i have visited, and Im sorry I cannot supply the link, which discusses time travel in movies and grades how good the science is. I'll bet you can Google it. Its interesting, but complex.

Temporal Displacement. The john in the future would be dead but the one in the present would be alive/will be alive and may also change the fact that he dies in the past by changing his future. Sorry watching star trek and its a similar sort of thing happening!

Because for him time would still be working normally just his actually location would be there and then. He is still capable of dying as his state upon entering the time machine is sent into the past, not that he physically regresses to what he would have looked like at that time.

Of course time travel isn't exactly possible in this way, so they can make whatever rules they want in the script. I don't see the problem, though. He was born in the future, but then came back and died. If he came back, couldn't anything happen to him?

Only his "future" self is killed in the past. Don't try to think too much about it. It's only a movie!!!!

because... he went there from the future, therfore he had already lived his past before he died. The future version of him died, not the past one.
But as time travel is not really possible, I guess we'll never know if its completely accruate depiction of what would happen.

He will be born again to save her.
Harry Potter 4 addresses this time-jump issue better than T1

Because if he came from the future he would technically be in the past when he died?

it's simple. If one alters the time flow by going back in time and dying there, his future self would be no more
