its not about protection from back stabbing or monitoring them or counter attacks. its so you can stab ur enemy in the back actually. if someone thinks they are your friend, you can learn intimate details about them in order to figure out the best way to f"ck them up.

if you know your enemies really well then its harder for you to get hurt by them.
i guess people figure that they are better protected if they know how their enemies minds work and what kind of power/influence they have.
oh and you can take better precautions when you know what your dealing with.
