I dont think it matters north or south, I think it depends on the teachers and student, and the standerds that are sit for that school district.

I have found that southern schools are more formal and northern schools are more informal. That might be seen as strictness.

For instance, my students from southern schools (esp. Texas) are very polite and respectful-yes ma'am, no sir, etc. (I love that.)

My northern students are more-Hey, Mrs. B, Dude!, What's up?, etc. That isn't a big deal, unless it is done disrespectfully.

I think that the school itself, north or south, is the factor for strictness. Some of the Northern schools are known for their discipline and are trend setters. My school, however, is middle of the line. A few schools, at which I have taught, are very lax with discipline.

On the flipside, some of the teachers I know say their Southern schools are very harsh and demand good behavior. But one or two of my friends say their schools are not tough enough.
