Hey All! I am 18 and am worried about getting pregnant with just the use of condoms during sex.I really want to start taking an oral contraceptive but am embarassed to speak to the doctor about it in case they need to do a gynacology exam or something similiarly invasive.
Do they need to do this or do they just check blood pressure and talk to you about pro's and con's and stuff, thanks!

Your GP should not have to do an internal exam for you to go on the pill. You are over 16 so they do not need to ask you any personal questions at all, it is your right to protect yourself from unwanted pregnancy. They will check your blood pressure and ask about family history of high blood pressure. I think you should go for it, it is the most effective form of contraceptive, just remember to take it! And it's free!

Well I take the pill and I am 24 and don't need an exam till I am 25 but even then I have the right to refuse. I go to my local Family Planning Clinic instead of my GP as prefer speaking to the female doctors !!!! They do checks on your blood pressure / weight and ask about the type of periods you have !!!

If you are 18, you need an exam. These exams are quick and painless and they are necessary to prevent female problems. If you are interested in oral contraceptives, talk to your doctor. They will need to do the exam to ensure that you are in good health and they can tell you the pros and cons of the pill. There is nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. All women have to have these exams for their health.

Because you are sexually active, it is recommended that you have a pap smear and exam every year. You can go to a completely different doctor, not your family practitioner, and that may make it easier. They do this stuff every day and see tons of people, it's normal for them, so don't be embarassed. Take your friend or sister with you.

If you don't want to do that though, you can go to Planned Parenthood and you can get BCPs without and exam. They will talk to you and take your BP and weight.

You must go and speak to your doc who dont forget has seen and heard everything..so you shouldnt be embarrassed. You might or might not be able to take the pill and need proper medical advise .
You should also remember that all women must have smear tests and unpleasant as they are they can save your life, these are usually done by a nurse at your gps practise so it doesnt have to be a male doc who does it.But all that said they cant force you to do something your not happy with so stop worrying and go!! good luck......

if you are sexually active you should be having regualr exams anyway for cervical cancer. the pills is a serious medication and yes you should be examined and have you blood pressure and family history examined too. if you are scared of pregnancy but happy to use condoms try using a diaphragm as well as condoms. the pill is not 100% secure and does alot of damage to your body if it doesn't suit you. it can occasionally increase you fertility. condoms protect you form disease and pregnancy. why are you scared of an internal. have a chat to your practise nurse about this.

If you are 18 and sexually active, you should be having annual gynecological exams anyway. They are a fact of life and a responsible way of keeping tabs on your health. Yes, if you want to go on the Pill, you will have to be examined first. Your doctor is a professional and there's no reason to be embarrassed... none of us like them, but we all live through them!
