Well, what do you like to sing?
Check the web for local artists
looking for singers if you want to
be in a band.
Practice at the Karaoke bars to get
in shape and be exposed to people.
Also singing in the church does the same
kind of thing.
Singing in Plays and singfests also help in this manner.
So I guess it all depends on WHAT you
like to do and what your tastes are.
With some input from you, I bet I can help.
As could many folks in your area I am sure.
You need to get out there. Are you under age
for bars? If so, then stick to the other stuff
mentioned thats non alchohol related venues.
Just know, that there is a lot better chance at
a long term success if you start this way.
American Idol is a long shot, and you may not
make that cut, but it doesnt mean you arent good.
It just means you tried out for a highly competitive
environment.
Instead, try doing what you REALLY love. What
comes from the heart.
Your passion will drive you and it will SHOW in
your performance.
Dont fall for the fake school of cookie cutter stuff.
Its usually a flash in the pan, and they just use
naiive folks up and spit em out.
I'm not necessarily saying not to try for something like
american idol, but usually, when you stick with what you
really love, people respond, and THATS how you build
a FAN BASE that lasts.

I would like to give you some useful information but i'm not exactly sure what all do you have in mind in being a "singer."
The only advice that I can give you is sing the songs that fits your range. If you decide to perform at night clubs, entertain the crowd. Just because your a good singer doesn't mean that your'e "road ready." I would also learn to play an instrument. There are too many singer's that wants to just sing and dance. Show what your really made of and people will respect what you do!!!

Start small. Like singing the national anthem at a few local events then save up the money to make a demo CD at a local studio. This should get you started. Good Luck!

By singing. Get people to talk about you. Let people know you're there and you can sing. That's how most people get famous: connections.
