usually when the heater core goes bad you will notice steam on the inside of your windshield and dampness on your carpet at the base of the passenger side floorboard. You can redirect the heater hose away from the core until you have the unit replaced.
good luck

The only way that a heater core goes out is if it developes a leak. Engine coolant runs through hoses connected to the heater core, which a fan or blower motor forces air through the heater core to heat the air going into the cabin of the vehicle.

A heater core is just a small radiator. About all it can do is burst. If this happens you should smell antifreeze real strong inside of vehicle and probably have coolant in floor. You may get a film on the inside of windsheld.

Chances are you will have a gush of anti-freeze that will fill the defrost vent inside the car, you will have the strong odor of anti-freeze. It smells sweet. You will also have a film on the inside of the front window. It will be fine for now, but come winter you will need it in order to have heat in the car.

You usually loose coolant, sometimes in the car, passenger side. You will smell a perfume scent and much moisture will be in the car. If you loose enough coolant your car will over heat. Suggest you have some one look at it.

It only gives out if it is plugged or leaking antifreeze
So you will either have a leak or just no heat
