I am not of your generation, so you may take this as you will. By our generation, since you don't list your age, I assume you are in your twenties or thirties. Please do not be offended, the question itself requires generalization.
There are undoubtedly plentiful 20 and 30 somethings living good and worthwhile lives. I certainly know many. But from the culture you have generated so far I have a feeling history will mark this era as rather self absorbed, amused by cruel and abusive pasttimes, and a little too ready to surrender your rights for comfort and safety.
Of course history is unfolding as we sit here at our keyboards. Somewhere out there are young people doing amazing things, and doubtless much will be done by your generation that will be beneficial. However I would feel more comfortable leaving the world to people that didn't think that a 'survivor' was merely someone who voted someone else off the island for not being cool, to people who didn't grant celebrity to others based on merely superficial qualities rather than real talent.
These are unfortunate qualities that this generation has demonstrated. You cannot be blamed for your general political apathy, that is typical of most younger people. It was in my generation's moment.
I truly am sorry if this answer sounds harsh, but there was the question, and after much thought, this was the answer I found within myself.

If there is a history to judge it may have little to say. Drugs, sex and rock and started after WWII and came to a climax in the 60's with the anti-war and protest movements and the alternative lifestyles. It was a time of inventiveness and experimentation. Not everything was great: the do your own thing and let it all hang out gave birth to the next generation having an outlook that was more egocentric, what has become to be known as the me generation. The 1980's and 1990's weren't particularly imaginative, in fact they were pretty dull. Music seems to be just imitation of what went before. There is little creativity and too much angst. The punks reflected the disillusionment of many of this generation, with politics, society, the world and religion. The rise of the 'me' generation is nothing to be proud of but that is quite likely what this generation will be remembered for.

I'm not crazy but it's the truth, let this seep in. I'm not being negative or anything but look around you and tell me what is so special about us from the earlier years of time or the past generation. I think they will look as our generation as the Confused Generation. What I mean by Confused is that we are all in our own groups and split up into sections. Rock, Hip-hop, etc.; it's crazy. I don't think we set milestones that weren't set before us. We are in a generation where we seek artificial heavens or earth. This is the generation of laziness, we have made a lot of things easier from what was done since the beginning of time. In my opinion, nothing we're doing is special because we are remaking what has already been made. We aren't pathfinders because all we are finding on our path is laziness and we haven't made contributions that God or anyone after him has made. The laziness that we are customed with will be our damnation. Our finest our will come when God comes.

History is a chronolgical record of events that have been taken from diaries, newspapers, photographs, recorded personal interviews: a myriad of sources.
Publishing companies who supply the public and private schools with books used in the classroom, provide subject matter. These companies "contract" with individuals considered to be knowledgeable in history to write these texts. Teachers may "interpret" the context of these books, and teach their students accordingly.
Every generation experiences milestones, and each generation, past and future, will become a part of "history".

I was born in 1981 and i think our generations finest hours have yet to come but i am optimistic. Regarding the youth of the turn of the millenium i reckon historians will comment on the mature and unblinded optimism we have regarding world affairs and the healthy dissillusionment we possess regarding our elder's mistaken ideals. On the other hand this generation is marked by a damning nihilistic hedonism and apathy which soaks though us and makes us at many times lazy and decadent. it is in my opinion that our generation when it matures it will be less corrupt than this one in charge, more moralistic regarding world and environmental affairs and less inclined to war due to this combined to our apathetic nature also. But in a way I think we will have to deal with our addiction to comfort and our hedonistic natures too-it will be more of a motive than pride or power.
This is the age which shifts dynamism from power vs peace to comfort vs practicalities, an age in which in our Western souls the battle is no longer pride vs compassion but laziness and hedonism vs responsibility and kindness. These will be the roots of a future if we are to survive-a survival which will include these aspects strongly as a cultural phenomenon.
Well-thats just my humble wee opinion.
