Fear of loss does not promote prosperity. Greedy people with fear of loss wouldn't ever have the capacity for taking full advantage of their greed by building wealth. Fear, of any kind, is anti-productive to materialism and is, overall, a poor strategy for life. Materialism is a result of our capitalistic society, the love of money, and/or the inability to perceive the spiritual nature of the world. Fear of death might be a reason, too. If that's what you mean by loss?

I don't think it is from a fear of loss. Many people in our country have not really felt loss.

It is like weight. Many people don't eat because they fear starving, or even because they feel hungry. They eat for all kinds of other reasons. But mostly pleasure. Or to avoid bordom.

I think materialism is the same thing. They buy for pleasure, they pleasurable things they lay their eyes upon actually do have an affect on the psyche. They have done studies with people hooked into machines measuring your brain patterns while in bleak surroundings and lush ones. Beautiful suroundings release more endorphins.

My 2 cents

I dont think materialism and/ or greed are really a result of fear of loss. To me they are a result of power hunger and inferirority complex. People who are afraid of loss are more likely to hold on to something a bit harder and keep a stash for bad times, but I dont think they would end up trying to gain more and more. Dont know if this makes sense to you

Some of us have parents or grandparents who lived through the Great Depression. They lost everything, and afterwards held on to everything they had so as not to be hurt that way again. I imagine they passed that way of thinking down to later generations.

In more recent years, due to increased stock market playing and gambling, some people have again lost everything - and don't plan for that to happen again, either.
