I know that bats are beneficial but I have 17 bats that live above my terrace. Each day, there is poop on the ground and my three babies step and crawl on it... I need an effective way to drive them away. I can't close the area where they live - they are all over - under the roof's tiles (south of France rounded tiles). I can't exterminate them (they are protected and... too cute!). Catching them would be nearly impossible.

Have you tried moth balls? They also make the same product in a flake. THIS WILL WORK. When I was a child, my church had a bad bat problem and we could get them to leave by putting out moth balls. They would return and we would put out new supplies of moth balls. If you put the bat houses on a nearby pole the moth balls may make it uncomfortable enough that they will leave the tiles and go over to the houses? Our local exterminator said that they liked the attic of our church because it was the tallest building in town and they would leave if they found a place that they liked better. He also said that if they could get their heads into a place they could get their entire bodies in there too. Don't let them get into your house.

There are devices you can buy that make a high pitched noise that drives them away....only problem is, if you have neighboring dogs near by they may react to it as well.

Try placing a bat house in another loaction that would be better for them. It may take them a little bit, but they may take to it better then the tiles.

If all else fails you can call around to the exterminators and tell them you want an exclusion. With them being protected someone in the area has to specialize in capturing and moving them to a better area.

Well this just a random idea but have you tried smoke?(and I don't know if it'll work) Or you can buy owl and release them to eat the bats. But then what would you do about the owls, let them go or keep them?

place a bat house further out in the yard. That way you can have the beneficial affects without the nuisances.
