Because they search, parse, and reccommend the cheapest airfares across several airlines giving telling you which dates are best to go, which airport, and saving money by taking a different airport.
in the good old days calling an airline directly was the WORST way to purchase a ticket.. they often charged $800 USD for a flight that would cost $150 on expedia, or such. Now airlines (specifically american airlines) have gotten with the program and now say "we will have the lowest fares on our website" so you can not get the cheapest AA flight on AA.com

Because I can obtain good prices and flights that are convenient for me, no fifteen minutes to try and change planes when your flight took off thirty minutes late, knowing you missed your connecting flights. I go to Travelocity, Orbitz, etc. to see who flies where. Then I go directly to each airlines web site. I like direct flights. Sometimes there are none.
When I fly from say, Detroit to Phoenix, it may be cheaper to find two changes of planes, but no way am I going to spend 16 hours in airports and flying and possible missed connections.

Sometimes you can get great deals on plane tickets and hotel rooms and even rental cars. Although if you're are just flying somewhere I've learned that its cheaper to get airline tickets through the airline directly.

Because they are lazy and that is a great way to find the best price. Then go to the original carrier and buy from them. Then you dont have to worry about little details like service fees

Convenience and price. There's no travel agent to deal with or pay commision to. Plus, you can play with as many different itineraries as you want without too much trouble or obligation.

To see if they can find discounted rates or 2 for 1 specials. Alot of times if you book in advance you save tremendously.

Because the airlines started charging more for buying
tickets at a reservations counter. They have to pay the employees money. If YOU do your own on the net
they don't have to pay you.....

Quicker, cheaper and can compare more easily instead of calling all the individual airlines.
