I agree with all the answers mentioned before me.Like you,I also drive a BMW but that problem I try to foresee by having my car controlled checked annually that way I feel more comfortable behind the steering wheel.

One of the uses of motor oil is to disinpate heat, but it would have to be serveral quarts low before it would cause enough friction to cause a tempreture change. By that time the engine would have locked down. I would start by checking water leaks, Electric fan operation, and Thermostat opening and closing for starters.

Samantha is right not having enough coolant will cause your car to overheat. Not having enough oil would be a big problem too so you had better keep them both full.

i agree, coolant/anti-freeze. double check that and the oil can cause excess heat to build up due to friction. makes sure you're having the oil changed regularly, every 3000 miles for regular oil, every 5000-6000 for sythetic.

Possibles: insufficient oil, low water, clogged radiator tubes, not enough air flowing over radiator fins, very hot outside, fan not kicking on, bad temp sensor...
