First go to an auto parts store and ask them to look up the correct bulb for your tail-lights.Next check your voltage and amperage at the bulb holder.Do this with a multimeter,the voltage should be around 14.4 volts.I don't know the proper amperage,sorry. If these are ok,install a small amount of bulb grease to the bulb holder ,and insert the bulb. You can get the bulb grease at the auto parts store. This should solve your problem.

Check and make sure your using the right bulb. If its getting hot enough to melt plastic it sounds like your using the wrong bulb.
