I think people have different reasons. Often it's because they can't find a partner to stimulate them. Sometimes people don't get Enough at home. Some people like to share it with their partner and watch it together. Some can't become properly aroused alone without it. I think it's usually completely harmless.

Thats a bit like saying why do people eat candy ?
Its not specifically good for you but you just want to do it.
Plus when you think of safe sex its a whole lot safer than doing it with a partner. Right ?
....as far as sexual relief goes it is faster, cleaner and you don't have to answer that ridiculous question...."do you still love me ?" (....hint ....if you have to ask that aftewards then you just made a huge mistake....if its important to you then you should know before you hit the sack)
I think the better question is why do people make porn ?
Thats the immoral side. Thats just for money.
