Yep Live here ! there are a lot of places that offer rafting as for hiking etc go to the gatlinburg viters center or go 1/2 mile into the park to the visiters center there they have all kinds of info as well as maps and closures. I doubt you will see a Black Bear in the mountains but they have a couple at Ober Gatlinburg as well as the 3 bears gift shop in pigeon forge, Both sets are in captivity IM afraid dont go to the Black Bear Jamboree as there are only animatronic cartoon bears there.

Make sure to go to the Smokey Mountain National Park. We saw 3 bear cubs in a tree with the mom on the ground laying around. Awesome. Be careful though, bear spotting can get tricky.

Yup.

If you're a rafting novice or with kids go down the Hiwassee or Nantahela. They're both pretty tame, although the Nantahela is really really cold, even in summer.

The Ocoee's a step up from that. There are other more hard core rivers to raft, but those are the only ones I've tried.

The touristy side of the mountain is Sevierville and Dollywood.

The serious, nature side of the mountain is Townsend. You're likely to see black bear, and you're just a hop from the river and the trails.

Pretty scenery -- but stay away from Gatlinburg (Myrtle Beach in the sky!). Or go on over to Virginia and North Carolina in the Blue Ridge Mountains ... take the Blue Ridge Parkway!
