It seems to me that we could use the billions spent on the rocks and pictures, and some sand, (that we already have here) to make OUR planet a better place.

Not only are we trying to find out more about our universe and the world around us, but we are making the planet a better place. We do many experiments in space we couldn't do here on earth because of gravity. Learning about our past also lets us better prepare for the future.

Are you not curious at all about what is out there? Other life forms, civilzations, where might we go to live besides here on earth? If you are concerned about the $$ being used in space, it would be better of you to first complain about the billions of dollars we spend on killing each other and developing better ways to do it. We are studying space because we ( at least any educated person ) are curious about things, we have questions, we want to know what is going on around us, how we got here and where we came from, where we might go to next. If you aren't interested in what's out there, and not curious about it, then what are you interested in? Let me guess, your mp3, ipod or music box, and video games and being on your cell phones all the time?

Part of the beauty and joy of living is wondering about the unknown. Not even the smartest people in the world can comprehend our universe. That's amazing...to know human limitations. And we obviously can't come to a decision as to how to make our own planet better.
