Walkers do not teach children how to walk. They use different muscles when in a walker. I know many people who were in them as a child and are fine, but some parents put their kids in them all day long. Studies have shown that children who spend a lot of time in walkers are slower to sit up, crawI, and walk. Another thing is that when in a walker a child can not see their feet, and an important part of walking is for a child to watch their feet as they learn to do so. Also the way a child sits in a walker is not good for their spine. I work with infants and hand out an article to all my parents about walkers. They are okay for 15 minutes at a time, if you need to do a chore, use the restroom,. etc... but it is not suggested that you have a child in them any longer than that.

They should not be used by people that live in a house with steps. When I was a baby I ripped the bolts right out of the wall and went all the way to the bottom of the stairs with the walker and gate tangled around me. They say that it delays a baby's ability to walk, but that is bull. My mom used walkers with all 4 of us kids and my oldest sister walked at 9 months...Gee, maybe if she didn't use a walker she could have been walking at 7 months...lol

I read that some walkers are too big to fit through doorways and the baby may be trying to walk through and get stuck breaking the walker and possibly getting hurt. But I think they're fine and babies love them. I also read that a walker doesn't give babies the sense of balance as would trying to walk on their own but I think as long as you dont let your baby overuse the walker and keep a good eye on him/her, which good parents always do anyway, then walkers are fine.

The reason Walkers, Swings, Bouncy Seats are being called bad for babies is because parents use them as babysitters when thats not their purpose. Too many babies die because they were left un-attended in them and the baby went down the stairs, tipped over, climbed out got stuck, fell from counter b/c bouncy seat was on it, and the list goes on and on.

It seems we always hear that walkers are bad for our children, but they never include the reasons "WHY"!
The only thing that I have ever heard, besides it's bad for them, is that it doesn't even teach them to walk the right way, and in turn can prolong them walking!
I don't neccesarily know what kind of walkers they are talking about either... the ones baby's sit in and walk around wouldn't seem to me "to be dangerous"! I have one that my son walks behind... and I can say that sometimes it rolls backward causing him to fall on his butt, or if it rolls to much forward and he doesn't walk with it he can fall straight on his face!
I think if you are watching your child closely then everything should be fine!

They say that it gives them a false sense of walking. it impairs there sence of perseption, how far and close things are and doesn't allow there hips to move enough.
Personally i think it is stupid, it allows them to be moble and feel for what walking is all about. If it wasn't practicle there would be alot of kids not knowing how to walk. i was in a walker and i ended up walking early.
use them they are "A OK" the only bad ones are those with a bottom, you know where the baby just stays in one place, yeah now those are stupid.

I believe the reason walkers are bad is because they don't teach a child about balance. You should try and use one of those Johnny Jump Ups. They help teach balance.

My daughter never liked the walker. She is 10months now and it has been in the closet for months now. She is standing up by herself and should be walking by her first birthday.... I have heard that walkers are bad but don't know why....

They are not bad, you just cant leave them in it all of the time. Also use a gate if you have steps and give them a little variety. Make sure they have plenty of floor time crawling and pulling up.
