I regret to inform you, money is not easily made from selling poetry-i assume you already know this, as your question indicates-i just repeated your assumption to get an idea across, its just not wise to try to do so-unfortunately there are too many "poets" running amok out there, also bad poetry does not sell, you might be able to sell bad fiction-never bad poetry-there are a lot of ego massaging so called publishing houses on line and off that will get you published-but none that will pay!! remember this-if you are a Hopkins or a Frost in disguise, perhaps you have a chance-buddy this is an age when it is difficult to sell good fiction, even romances are difficult to sell-poetry will not make you money-give up the idea-Let your meters and your rhyme live for you, let them be real for you(but i do not think you will ever make money from it) you can always try selling it on line and off-but best of luck, you will need it!! in spades!!

full time profession or just cash on the side?

try your local poetry market. find hotspots that have poetry or open mic night. not sure if all of them pay - but if not this is a good start still. you have to put your voice out there, and then people will bite. keep your ear peeled to events that are calling for entertainers such as weekend parties, sports after parties etc...and get on the ticket to perform. the stipend might be small but again its a start. up and coming artists or comedy shows that need an opening act. plus get the writer's market guide - it has tons of leads on magazines/companies etc that pay for original work. don't know how great the demand is for poetry but stop by a local bookstore and browse the contents before you purchase it.

good luck

Nobody makes much money from poetry. You should concentrate on making it the best poetry you can possibly write. Don't think about the money. You'll never be able to live off the proceeds of writing poetry, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't write it anyway.

making money writing poetry won't work. VERY LITTLE poetry is published today (outside of those silly anthologies at those scam poetry publishing places). There just isn't any money in poetry. Try something else.

Write poetry that speaks your deepest truths. If the gift is in you, the money will find a way.

Make a collection of poems and submit it to a poetry publisher. That won't guarantee anything, of course, but it's at least a start.

i would recommend publishing your poetry using someplace like lulu.com. Then go on a book tour, poetry readings, book festivals, etc. Maybe do some interviews on what inspired you to write it, your message, etc.
