First, the youTube video...

The first thing that you have to do is save it to your computer.
Find the video and copy the url from the location bar of your browser. Then, go here, http://www.videodl.org/
Paste it in there and click the button, it will give you a download link. Save the "get_video" file. For me, the file saves without an extension. So, you will have to rename it with .flv at the end. It's a flash video which in it's current form is probably useless to you. So, proceed to the next step....

You'll need to convert this thing to mp4 format. But, you can't get there directly from an flv. You will have to first convert it to an avi.

At this point, I'll direct you to these instructions,
http://www.uneasysilence.com/archive/2006/02/5444/

As you see, you'll need to download two programs, RivaFLVencoder and Videora iPod Converter. They are both free and work well.

In short the process looks like this,

YouTube + videodl--> flv--> RivaFLVencoder--> avi--> Videora--> mp4--> iPod

For the DVD, it's in MPEG-2 format. That's standard for DVDs. For that, you will again use Videora. But first, you have to get the video off the DVD. So, you are going to need one more program before you begin, DVD Decrypter.

The links to the software and the full instructions are available at the Videora website over here,
http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/guides.html

So for this, you'll do these steps,

DVD--> DVD Decrypter--> vob--> Videora--> mp4--> iPod

(vob is an MPEG-2 file)

All this will seem pretty confusing at first and it will take a bit of time. After you do it a couple of times, you'll get the hang of it.

The headphone connector on the 5th generation iPod (iPod with video) accepts an Apple-branded A/V cable with RCA connectors for composite video and stereo analog audio. Apple sells this compatible cable for US$19. you can use it to transfer your picture data from DVD to iPod and USB cable to store youtube videos to iPod.
