The term racist is extremeley misused, generally to play the "race card." Moreover, the term is commonly inappropriately placed in the wrong context. Also, poliitcal correctness has allowed the term racism to fluorish, because in this day and age, you can't criticize anybody, their government, their heritage, good or bad, without being called a racist. Therefore, the practice of poliitcal correctness with the help of terms like racism is doing what it is designed to do...so noone will say anything that anyone would be object to.
Moreover, Rev. Al Sharpton is the biggest racist of all. He is a great example of the boy who cried wolf. By calling all white people racist, he has become a racist himself, and definetly has used the race card too often that the real situations of absolute racism are ignored.

It's a word which is misused to describe situations where racism isn't involved at all, in order to gain some advantage - called using the race card. It is used too readily when it is used as a weapon and not as a shield. Misuse alienates the support from those opposed to racism.

Yes it is. Actually I think there are many situations in which the race card is played where is should not be. However, there are situations where there really is a problem and racism should be addressed but for a variety of reasons it is not. So perhaps a better answer would be that it is a word often used inappropriately.

Have been thinking about that in recent times. It's a relatively new concept you see. Every man and his dog seems to spout off about it eg young people, civil servants, local government employees, the police etc, etc, etc. It was very rare to hear about race as a topic of conversation when my generation was growing up. Compared to the modern generation practically every one of your grandparents and great grandparents would have been labled racist. A silly newspaper reporter branded Winston Churchill one not so long ago. Of course he was! Everyone is a product of the society they grow up in. I can recollect words being used in the household of my youth that would nowadays get all the family jailed. And don't take the present position as sacrosanct. It's like sex. Every generation seems to think they invented it!!

Yes. It is thrown around like it actually means something anymore.
I personally don't like racists, but it's America. A person has the right to be racist. You don't have to like him or associate with him. You can try to persuade him but cannot change him by calling him what he is.
