Just saw on Yahoo News plans to kill all dogs because of rabies and a few deaths over 8 month period. So I ask, is that right? Secondly did these peope get it from eating dogs, bit by them? I don't know, I will read up more on it, but seems to me killing all 500,000 dogs in that area is wrong.

This goes way beyond killing of deceased animal for humanitarian or decease control reasons. From what was reported, the government not only grab the stray dogs but also the ones on leashes being walk by their owners. Pets, whether they are in China or in America can be very much an extended part of the family. Would you imagine someone grabbing a member of your family and club him to death on the spot?

There are several issues involve here. One is the general health of standard in China involving pets. Education and civil priorities have a lot to do with that. The more disturbing issue is the autocratic form of government that can do such a thing and violate the civil liberties of its people yet the citizens have few recourse. Try that in the streets of America and I will guarantee you that government official will be in jail. Perhaps this is another reason why so many people will risk their own lives just to get over here. By the same reason why we Americans should never take our civil liberties for granted.

Rabies is contracted through saliva (or mucousal secretions) on an open wound
Anyways, when dogs get rabies they suffer but ethanol is painless. Containing a dangerous virus is a very important because an outbreak could easily spread and affect the surrounding wildlife (maybe even hurting the few pandas left!).

-oh, and also... be sceptical of what you read! 500,000 dogs hanging out in a 3 mile radius is nuts. Think about it.

I think that it is horrible. As cheap as rabies vaccinations are, I don't know why only 3% of the dogs in the country are vaccinated. As an up an coming country in the fields of science and technology, one would think that they would have more common sense than that. I'm not sure how they are getting the rabies. You would think eating a stray dog would not be the best idea, maybe they are getting bitten by the dogs?

Are they killing family pets, or strays? If it's strays, I don't think this is such a bad idea.

I used to be very much against euthanizing animals (overcrowding in shelters, for example) until I saw "Shelter Dogs" (a documentary about shelters that kill dogs they've had for a long time. I know this isn't quite the same, but it changed my view of euthanasia.

If these dogs are sickly and starving and diseased and overall uncomfortable, what kind of quality of life do they have?

On the other hand, if they're actually killing pets who have been vaccinated, that's just wrong.

Well, here in the US we are knowledgeable enough to know that if you pin a dog long enough (a few days?) you will be able to tell if it has rabies. You know foaming mouth and all. Over there they didn't mind killing hundreds of people just a few years ago. (TIENIMAN SQUARE) I for one am glad to live in the good ole USA!!! Am also glad not to be a Chinese dog!

CUJO .... CUJO ... CUJO

Cujo by Steven King ... scary ... dogs with rabies are scary. Sure it's sad that they're all being killed, but dogs with rabies kill and spread rabies ... Could u imagine a China town with humans who had rabies??? It would be more destructive than a Godzilla movie.

I think that killing 500,000 dogs is better than letting one person die of rabies. If you was someone you knew than you would agree with me.

You're concerned about the dogs? Hello, perhaps you should focus your concern on the millions of children murdered each year due to their anal child-bearing policies. This is CHINA... nothing they do is humane.
