Why do teenagers are sticking out their tongues and lips in nearly every photograph I see. Even on Yahoo mail half the time I go to the log-in page there is picture of someone with their tongue hanging out. I think it looks pretty silly, but I did some pretty silly stuff as a teenager too.

It also seems that anytime I ask this question it brings up a defensive answer. The most common being "who cares" or "does everything have to be explained" I'm not unhappy about the tongues or offended by them. I just wonder where the idea started. Is there a specific pop culture figure being emulated. Just curious about where or how the fad originated.

i'm a Christian and that i think maximum situations of conversing in tongues to be staged, pretend, demonic, and or in simple terms hopeful questioning. I do have self belief its attainable and that i do no longer deny that the Spirit of the Lord would reason a guy or woman to talk in tongues or obtain different Pentecostal presents. I in simple terms have self belief 80 5-ninety% of the situations are no longer probably from God and a few thing else is inflicting them.

As an infant suckling at your mother's breast, when you were full you would stick out your tongue to expel the nipple. Your mom would then know you were full, burp you and lay you down in your crib for a nap.

Eventually showing even the tiniest bit of tongue as a child, adolescent, adult has become a subliminal signal that says "stay away, I don't want anything, don't want to talk, etc."

Sticking it out farther is just a way of shouting out that message.

To be silly. I do it in photographs still and I'm not a teen anymore. Only because I think I look better if I'm acting silly rather than just giving a normal smile.

I think it is meant to be a show of confidence, rebellion like other people have said, but I think it actually has the opposite effect as it is usually people with low self confidence who feel they have to play the clown rather than be real

maybe it is a type of rebellion - not conforming to the stereotypical "smile" in a picture. Instead of smiling, they do the opposite, and pull silly faces.

I think it has to do with asserting independance. like in pictures we are told to smile, but sticking your tongue out is like saying NO

It is a form of defiance and not wanting to be taken seriously.
