Because like too many cooks in the kitchen without a leader nothing would get done. Without order and leadership there would be anarchy.

Humans do not act as ants do .. we need leaders to organize the masses so things can be accomplished. Sadly the power is too often abused but without leaders we would just have chaos such as when a teacher leaves the classroom.

Shepherds are needed to lead, protect, feed and guide the flock. Society needs people to put in place laws, and to enforce the laws for the benefit of every member of society. A laissez faire society is ideal but not practical.

Without a hierarchical authority structure, decisions that affect the group have to be made by group consensus, which is slow at best and impossible at worst.

Of course we need someone to blame all of the world's problems on.
What would individuals do with no leadership whatsoever? I imagine chaos, and back to caveman day type behavior would occur.

so nerds can get back at the world when they grow up ---- chaos does not ensue without leaders --- the leaders assemble the heards and cause the chaos ----
anytime a group of people "get rowdy" its because somebody got up and started the angry mob

because most of society is sheep and do as everyone else, just look at religion for example, would anyone who could think for themself actually buy one story over another for any logical reason? No, they would believe in the most factually based story, science.
