To some it stands for "Black Man's Wish" but in reality it stands for Bavarian Motor Works (in English) or Bayerische Motoren Werk (in German). The logo, called a roundel represents a airplane propeller - since the company started as an airplane maker. Several other people had this same answer.

Bayerische (Bavarian) Motoren (plural of Motor) Werk (the German term for 'factory' - we have no literal equivalent for this term in English). The blue & white roundel signifies a whirling airplane propeller, since BMW's roots are founded in WW II airplane engine production. The colors blue & white are also the colors of the state of Bavaria ('Bayern' in German). The capital city of Bavaria is Munich ('Muenchen' in German).

I think it stands for Berlin Motor Works - but in Deutch obviously. I'm not sure what their logo signifies, most logos don't really signify anything. They're just logos.

cheers.
