my female rats claws are so sharp that when she scratches herself she bleeds, and when she sits on my hand, her claws puncture my skin.

I agree that there is no difference between male and female rat claws. If your rat won't let you cut their claws, you can use a nail file to file them down safely.
I have a couple of bricks in my cages to wear down claws and it has worked wonders. One brick is under the water bottle and one is by the door, so that they have to walk on it. My rats actually prefer to sit on the brick to drink as the other water bottle is rarely used.

as to customedreamer or whatever his name is....rats are sooo much better than mice! So much more intelligent and CLEAN! But you should just take a small set of human nail clippers and cut her claws. It's really easy to do if she is a calm one. Most likely what is happening is just that her claws haven't been cut at all so they will keep growing and break a bit so that they become sharper. But it is an easy solution, just make sure she doesn't continue to hurt herself! Also watch her teeth. That is not so easy to take care if they get too long. You'll have to pay a ot of money to have a vet cut them so make sure she is eating crunch hard foods every now and then to keep her teeth short! Hope that helped some!

I agree, why in the world would anyone want a rat as a pet? I HATE mice, rats and rodents in general! I have some of both running around under the house if I catch them I will send them to you!

I think that both mice and rats make wonderful pets. I currently have 12 mice and 2 rats.

Anyways, from my experience (I also work at a pet store that only sells male rats- mine at homes are girls) there is no difference. It sounds to me like she simply needs her nails trimmed.

I have a female pet Rat. We put fallen limbs from trees for her to climb on. I have never had to trim her nails. We also put certain card board in her cage for her to chew on. She is the 3rd rat we have had & she is the best. Very loving & very spoiled LOL She is one of the best animals we have had

If her claws are that sharp, CUT them. The only reason they're like that is she has no surface she runs on that wears them down.

There's no reason that they would be. Maybe you should just trim them. Kudos on having a pet rat. Aren't they great?

Her nails need to be trimmed! You can get a cat toe nail trimmer and do it yourself by cutting off the tip or get someone else to do it for you. I did it all the time to my ratties! Hey you rule..you are a rattie owner!
