I am 6'7, 220lb and I want your ipod. And there are no cops around.

Now do you really want me to break my mind free of society norms?

What a great observation this is! You're exactly right.

Just the other day, I made this observation: The younger a person is, the more attention people pay to his well-being and development.

Parents fuss over their babies and their toddlers wanting the best for the development of their potential. Then, sometime around school age, everything changes. No more do parents encourage kids to explore their worlds and to "be kids".

The fear of their kids not "fitting in" with all the other kids makes parents paranoid, and they shift into reverse, demanding that their kids toe the line instead of making their own way like they did before.

(This is all generalization. Many parents start the "breaking-in" process in infancy, and a few others encourage their kids' personal development throughout life.)

By the time they are teenagers, most adults resent these young people, in whom the fire of life and real growth still burns. I think adults secretly wish they had teenagers' combination of sexual virility, a rich social network, and a relatively free-living lifestyle.

So, the answer to your question is that adults force younger people--who are, like you said, born "free"--to fit the mold that their society says everyone should fit into. Few parents want to raise a child who doesn't fit in.

This is a tragedy because kids are the bearers of many secrets of life that adults long ago abandoned themselves, when their own adult overseers squeezed the "kid" out of them.

Because man thinks he is weaker than he truly is. We are stronger than we can imagine. If we can only believe it.
