Because of the alcohol and tobacco lobby. It also has something to do with the Latino community using it in place of alcohol as their drug of choice.

It happened in 1937 when DuPont developed a way to make paper from tree pulp using a chemical process. DuPont coupled with Hurst who at the time was the largest new paper baron basically controlling the news in a number of major cities, (he incidentally owned fast amounts of woodland, perfect for the new paper making process). Hurst printed articles and cartoons which told of, and depicted black men seducing white women with 'the evil weed' marijuana. The Senate being made up of old white men who were of course paranoid of black men at that time had to do something. The bill put forth to outlaw marijuana, which passed, included hemp, (the cousin of marijuana without the drug THC). The whole purpose from the beginning was to get hemp made illegal because it was the crop that we made most of our paper, textiles, and so many other things from at that time. Hemp is today, probably the single most important plant available to mankind which has no drug effect whatsoever. Why is it illegal then? Because of greed, corruption, and stupidity. Marijuana was just the excuse. So today we have the largest lobbying bodies in Washington who will not allow either to become legal again. The pharmaceutical companies don't want marijuana to become legal because they make money selling their chemical drugs which do what some plants like marijuana that you can grow in your garden could do. (They actually synthesize THC for glaucoma patients now.) The oil industry and the petrol chemical industry would suffer terribly because so many petroleum based products could be made from hemp. The B2 Stealth Bomber is made with a hemp composite framing. (The military has used hemp whenever it's needed to coincidentally.) Half or more of pesticides and herbicides are used just on cotton alone because it is such a susceptible crop. Hemp on the other hand is such a strong crop it would use hardly any. I could go on but I'm starting to get pissed as I do any time I think about this situation. It's one of the most startling displays of corruption and public ignorance there is. The United States government could be funding education instead of war. We could be growing hemp instead of being so dependent on using chemicals and oil for so many things. The sad truth is the government isn't 'for the people, by the people', it's just a powerful organization for sale. If you visit the Smithsonian Institute and view the textile exhibit which displays cotton instead of hemp, (even though at the times depicted most textiles were made from hemp) you would wonder how such an institute of knowledge could mislead like this. On a tour, one curator was asked why there was no hemp on display in the textile exhibit. The curators response was, 'it would only confuse the children'. Confuse the children indeed. The U.S. has been successful in persuading most all other nations on the planet to do the same in the name of the almighty dollar.

in the late 1930's the government started "Reefer Maddness" to scare people into not smoking. it was legal up until 1937...it has to do with the great depression and the economy, and the fact that most of the ganja brought into the states was brought by mexicans, and there was a general dislike of immigrants during the depression...taking jobs, etc. so the government linked the weed to the depression and the law was passed.

Because in 1937, when marijuana was first made illegal, the only people who smoked it were blacks and Mexicans. It was a tool for law enforcement to be able to screw over minorities.
The main reason it's remained illegal is because smoking it can interfere with your programming - the indoctrination you've received to convince you to go along with the government. Once people start smoking it and realize they've been sold a load of crap by the authorities, they may start thinking for themselves on other subjects as well.

It's illegal because it's a class related product, if you get arrested with crack you'll probably go down in jail for a long time, but if you have powder cocaine, then you'll likely get a lesser jail sentence, it's similar to in the early 20th century, they outlawed the cheap drinks like fortified wine, but whiskey and cognac were still legal. It's all to keep the poor people opressed.

Because they dont want to see us High happy and in chill mode. They want us to drink, be humbugish, fight, shoot at each other and cause vehicular homiside while intoxicaded on drinks. We will never be high legaly. They know nothing is wrong with it but the cancer risks and the short term memory loss. People who get high dont feal the need to be vilent or have all kinds of deadly disfunctions. When I get hi I just be chillin ya feal meh? I need to make a question asking why is alchohol legal.

because major business (such a textiles, fuels, and several others) would get wiped out by hemp products. as for the buds to smoke, its absurd. during the prohibition days, bootleggers could pull in to a country store and purchase coke. its just the government being conservative pansyasses

Why is anything illegal? Because, at one time our government deemed it to be dangerous to our society. I dont personally believe it should be illegal, as its use doesn't cause anyone harm besides yourself. Which is actually pretty evident due to how you asked that question.

cause government can't control it and they dont like things they cannot control.
In truth they can control nothing at all and soon to be awakened to that but in the meantime that is why.
