I would suggest a corn snake or a ball python. Both are docile and make wonderful pets. However, it kinda depends onhow big you want. Some snakes, like red-tails hit 9 feet easily. Ball Pythons hit three feet and will grow over 10-15 years afterward. They hit 5 feet as old snakes. Corn snakes hit adult size about 3 feet and are about the diameter of a quarter. They will hit 5-6 feet over 5-10 years, but still be about as big around as a quarter or half dollar. They need a minimum of a 30 gallon tank, compared to a red tail boa needing a 60 or 70 gallon, minimum. Money wise, you're looking at a couple hundred dollars extra for a tank to house the snake if you get a redtail boa.

Personally, I love my red tail boa... but they tend to be the type of snake for a more experianced handler, simply because of their size...

I agree with a few of the answers before me... A Corn Snake or a Ball Python would most likely be best for you.
